School Food Standards Enforcement Is Coming: Is Your School Ready for 2027?
The Government is preparing to introduce a stronger national system for monitoring compliance with the School Food Standards in England, with enforcement expected from September 2027.
Recent reporting suggests that one option being considered is for Environmental Health Officers to check School Food Standards compliance alongside routine food hygiene inspections. The final enforcement model has not yet been confirmed, but the direction of travel is clear: schools will increasingly need to be able to demonstrate that the food they serve meets the required standards.
What should schools be checking now?
Schools should be confident that:
Their current menu meets the School Food Standards.
What is actually served reflects the published menu.
Responsibilities for food provision and monitoring are clear.
Governors and senior leaders receive appropriate assurance.
School food policies and menus are kept up to date.
A compliant-looking menu is not enough if the food served in practice is different.
